PROJECT DESCRIPTION

West 8th Street Station is located near Surf Avenue in Brooklyn just one block north of the New York Aquarium. It serves the New York City Subway’s BMT Brighton IND Culver lines.

This renovation project included the reconstruction of mezzanines to reorganize and add station facilities, the rehabilitation of station platforms and replacement of the windscreen and canopy materials. Opening the windscreen to enhance views and employing creativity in the design of the panels proved to be the most important and challenging task. The CCA team turned normally flat planes into three-dimensional, undulating volumes. The design made the façade of one level fit between the waves of the other so the entire wall seems to be breathing.

The CCA team followed the parameters of New York City Transit’s design standards, using the materials and colors the agency selected.
