PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Located at 50th Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan, a CCA Civil-led joint venture built a new ventilation facility for the East Side Access project to support the new Long Island Railroad terminal at Grand Central Terminal. A landscaped public plaza with seating and a waterfall also were installed for the benefit of the community.

The project required removing five  existing buildings, excavating the new facility’s foundation and shafts, installing initial and permanent rock support, lining the tunnel with concrete, constructing a new ventilation service in the building and reinforcing the loading deck.

Because the site is surrounded by high-rise buildings and busy streets and sidewalks, minimizing the impact to the public presented a challenge. The surrounding buildings were constantly monitored to ensure their integrity was not affected. A temporary roadway deck also was built to facilitate the excavation and construction of the service tunnel connecting to Madison Yards.

CCA Civil earned the Bonus Schedule Incentive by completing this project before the 2010 Holiday Embargo.
